River Linth originates in the mountains of canton Glarus and feeds Walensee and then Lake Zurich. This has not always been like this, however. The plane between these two lakes used to be wetlands before 19th century hydraulic engineers had the idea to force River Linth to turn right to Walensee first and connect the two lakes with a channel (Linthkanal). |

When the river leaves Lake Zurich in Zurich, they call it River Limmat. Limmattal [Limmat valley] from Zurich down to Baden / Turgi, where River Limmat joins River Aare, is a highly industrialized region, with heavy traffic both on roads and rails and one of Switzerland's two major railroad shunting yards focusing on shunting internal freight distribution.
River Sihl originates in the prealpine hills near Einsiedeln, today there is a storage lake (Sihlsee). River Sihl runs in parallel with Lake Zurich, separated by a chain of hills and joins River Limmat just after having "through" Zurich main station (intercity rail traffic runs on ground level, River Sihl below, and suburban S-Bahn traffic one level below both River Sihl and River Limmat).
